PREMIERE: London’s Son Joan Shares Noisy New Track & Video For ‘First Birth’
Ethan Attwood-Summers aka Son Joan likes things a little loud. His fuzzed out, guitar-driven noise rock is made using only his voice, a Fender stratocaster and a drum machine. It’s a simple kind of chaos that’s bursting with passion, and we’re very pleased to be premiering his latest single.
We were first introduced to Son Joan in 2014 when he released his debut EP and hooky as hell track ‘Sucker Punch’. Since then it’s been quite the sporadic musical journey, spending time doing guitar session work for other artists and gaining a Fine Art degree. Now, at 23-years-old, he’s back in the game and ready to gift us with some new music.
Taken from his forthcoming EP Ever Said, ‘First Birth’ is a trippy swirl of persistent percussion, distorted vocals and unexpected tempo shifts. "I was obsessing over how much off-kilter energy I could cram into its three and a half minutes. I like to think that because of this, the feel of the song reflects a juxtaposition of both intense and uplifting feelings.”
His latest track comes with an equally distorted video that was self-shot and directed, “I'm always after striking, memorable images when it comes to the videos. With 'First Birth' I wanted the visual to match the song, so naturally it looks quite off balance and distorted." It’s here we see Son Joan’s artistic ability shine through.
Working with London producer Rory Attwell (Warm Brains, ex-Test Icicles) on the new EP, they’ve been able to harness a sound that is both massive and meaningful. Ever Said is set for release 23rd June and will be available to download (free) via the Son Joan bandcamp. For now, dig into the fuzzy delight below.
