Jamila Woods has hands down released one of the most powerful albums of 2019. Her poetic flair on LEGACY! LEGACY! is historic, hard-hitting and entirely seamless. It’s a theme of empowerment that fully celebrates everything that she is - an extremely talented woman of colour, telling it like it is.

Directed by Vincent Martell and produced by Ramone Hulet, her latest video was inspired by James Baldwin’s ‘Letter To My Nephew’. It reveals a school in Chicago that is transformed with a touch of Woods’ magic dust - “To outsiders, the school appears to be abandoned—one of the 50 public schools closed under Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s watch in 2013. However, for Black people in the neighborhood this space is a gem, an oasis of Black learning and radical education for young people. We shot part of the film documentary-style, to include young people’s perspectives on what they would want their dream school to be like.”

The video, much like her music, manages to blend an effortless style of poetic flow with some of the most important musical storytelling known to date. It’s poignant, powerful and completely irresistible - a story that everyone needs to hear. See for yourselves below.
